O'Grady's father is Jim O'Grady. Her mother, Jan, was a financial planner. She was raised in Wheaton, Illinois, and completed her studies at Wheaton North High School in 1981. The model was featured in a few commercials prior to moving from Wheaton, Illinois to Los Angeles. Her career O'Grady started her career as model for Montgomery Ward, and well having a number of commercials. She made her screen debut with the 1988 romantic comedy She's Having a Baby, and later was cast in recurring part on the ABC drama China Beach opposite Dana Delany. In addition to guest-starring on various shows, and in independent films and TV-produced films, she also appeared as an actor in a variety of TV shows. Her first big role was as Donna Abandando on the ABC police show NYPD Blue. O'Grady's role as the tall and blonde secretary of the squad was played from 1993-96. Each of the seasons, she was awarded one of the Emmy Award in the category for Outstanding Supporting Performance in Drama Series. Along with her castmates, she was awarded the Screen Actors Guild Award for the best performance by an ensemble in a Drama Series in 1995.
